“Everything is reaction inducing. So much of the way we live is just totally absurd to me. I wanna embrace it instead of falling back on a default eye-roll”, says Miza Coplin, Art Baby Gallery member and illustrator currently residing in Brooklyn. But despite having not taken drawing seriously since her days of doodling gothic fairies growing up, after moving to New York to be with her sister Coplin found herself constantly surrounded by creatives in the cultural capital, inspiring the 24-year-old to put pen to paper and document the weirdest corners of her mind.

Azores and its pre-historical human testimonies

Carta enviada hoje [6/2/2016] ao Gabinete do Comissário para os Direitos Humanos e ao Secretário do Intra-Institutional Meeting do PECSRL (Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape)

To the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights

I endorse Antonieta Costa’s request for the scrutiny of the Terceira Island Cultural Landscape to the Permanent European Conference for the Study of the Rural Landscape in what concerns attention to its protection, management and development.

Dear people,
I am addressing your organization with the intention of obtaining an impartial assessment to this “Azores Case”. By establishing communication with the cultural landscape research groups and a more interactive relationship with the European research network (through being integrated in its assembly), I expect to obtain new answers for the protection, management and development of the particular case I am studding in the Azores, the most distant of the European landscapes.
Monitoring some archaeological vestiges here in Terceira Island, Azores, on a project of post-doctorate in Anthropology of Space with the University of Porto, Portugal (2014/2017), I am finding great difficulties for the acceptance of its results from the part of the authorities (national and regional). This happens due to the nature of the archaeological findings, which contradicts the “established” history of the discovery of the islands by the Portuguese in the XV century. In result, the entire (Portuguese) archaeological body manifests opposition, while the foreign one (among whom there is Sir Barry Cunliffe) approves their validity. In order to obtain external recognition for this ignored and endangered heritage I have decided to avoid the main issue and simply apply for the rights to the classification of the phenomenon as “Rupestral Landscapes” (which means “Cultural Landscapes”). This could be done by ignoring the battle about the age of these findings and simply recognizing their engravings as “manmade”, thus, determining this type of Landscape as “Cultural”, or better: “Rupestral” (which means exactly that), leaving the authorship and datation for future studies, which would then be allowed…
By the nature and volume (several square kilometers) of these findings I am sure there will be no problem for an external jury to proceed to its classification. For my study I was recording specially the rock basins carved in the bed rock, from which there is a countless number. Some of these basins are displayed in an area with a scale of several square kilometers, marked by rock formations with zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figures surrounded by rocks similar to menhirs, most of them carved with signs, suggesting a cultural manifestation. But with the denial for permission and support for archaeological studies, from the Portuguese and Regional authorities, I am now looking for its economic feasibility in order to repair the profit of the population, while waiting for better conditions for its proper study.
I can send you a pdf of a publication depicting the situation. Or, you can search in Amazon.com “The Rock Basins of Serra do Cume”, considering the possibility to help developing here a new EU-project.
Waiting for an answer, my best regards

Paisagens Rupestres da Ilha Terceira

Quarta, 02 de Dezembro de 2015
CANDIDATURA
